refFinder helps you find meets to ref and helps meet organizers find and pay you

Some vocabulary we use across refFinder:

  • "Tournament Organizer": The person who posts the tournament on refFinder and who is ultimately responsible for ensuring referees are paid.
  • "Tournament": A competition lasting up to five days with one address and payment method. Tournaments typically have multiple events.
  • "Event"/"Position": A portion of a tournament with a specific start time and weapon for which one or more referees can be hired.
    • USA Only:
The tournament organizer can specify a minimum level of experience for each position; in order to qualify for hiring, a referee must have the desired rating or higher (in the correct weapon) attached to their refFinder account. To add a USFA rating, please click here.

Payment: Some tournaments on refFinder pay their referees in person while others pay their referees through our PayPal system.

To find out what payment method is being used for a tournament, click on the position you are interested in.  Underneath the address and description, there is a field "Payment Method" which explains how referees at this meet are paid.

For Tournaments where Referees are Paid in Person:

  1. If you are hired for a position (and accept):
    • The tournament organizer is requested to pay you (the referee) the price quoted in the related refFinder listing, in person (not through refFinder), assuming you perform your job correctly.  Failure to do so may result in an investigation by refFinder which could result in the organizer's account being permanently closed.
    • You will be able to withdraw without consequence up to (and including) four days before the event.
    • If you must withdraw within three days of the start of the event, you are requested to contact the tournament organizer directly.
    • If you fail to show for and referee the event (and did not withdraw through refFinder), an investigation may be launched and your refFinder account suspended*.
    • Referees who fail to show for (and fail to withdraw through refFinder from) multiple events may have their refFinder account permanently terminated.

  2. If the tournament organizer needs to cancel a tournament you are hired for (and have accepted):
    • At least six days before the tournament start date, they can do so after paying you a penalty ($5 per hired ref position.)
    • Within five days of the the tournament start date, they must contact and make individual compensation arrangements with each referee.  If refFinder receives complaint(s) about a tournament organizer not compensating referee(s) for the cancelation, on short notice, of a job, refFinder may launch an investigation and as a result of which organizer's account could be suspended.
To provide an idea of what we refer to as "justifiable compensation", please consider the fact that tournaments paid through PayPal that are canceled within five days of tournament start require organizers to pay hired & confirmed referees their quoted fee.

For Tournaments where Referees are Paid through PayPal (U.S. Only):

  1. If you are hired for a position (and accept):
    • At the conclusion of the tournament, the tournament organizer will pay all referees at once through refFinder's PayPal payment system.
    • You will be able to withdraw without consequence up to (and including) four days before the event.
    • If you must withdraw within three days of the start of the event, you will be required to pay a $10 fee*.

    • At least six days before the tournament start date, they can do so after paying you a penalty ($5 per position.)
    • Within five days of the the tournament start date, they will not be allowed to do so - this is as a courtesy to our referees: we do not want referees to turn down other job opportunities only to have their forthcoming payday disappear at the last minute.  If the tournament is not being held, the organizer is requested to contact each hired & confirmed referee as a courtesy; however, they will still be required to pay all referees after the tournament end date.  If the organizer does not pay for a tournament, even under these conditions, refFinder may launch an investigation and as a result of which organizer's account could be suspended and subject to a reactivation penalty charge.

  3. When you are paid for a tournament you refereed, the tournament organizer makes a payment to your PayPal account.  You can then immediately use this money to make payments via PayPal or transfer it to your regular Bank Account.  For more information, please visit our PayPal Guide.

For Tournaments in the UK:

  • All wages for all positions in tournaments listed in the UK will be considered listed in GBP
  • All refFinder fees, penalties, and other incidental charges are assessed in USD. If you are using PayPal outside of the United States, any currency conversion necessary will be handled by PayPal.

*Exceptions may be made in the event of extenuating circumstances.
